Is Staying at a Disney Resort Worth the Extra Cost?

If you’ve ever planned a Walt Disney World vacation, you’ve probably asked yourself this question: Is staying at a Disney Resort really worth the extra cost?

My answer? Absolutely! In my opinion, you just can’t beat the convenience of staying on Disney property. But for me, it’s about so much more than convenience. It’s about staying in the magic.

I’ve experienced Walt Disney World in just about every way you can imagine. I’ve camped in a tent at a campground, stayed at a hotel just outside the main gates, stayed at a non-Disney resort on Disney property, and even rented a vacation house with a private pool. All those experiences had their own benefits, but if given the choice, I’d stay at a Walt Disney World Resort every time.

Let me tell you why.

The Convenience of Staying on Disney Property

Let’s talk about what a typical park day can look like when you’re staying off-site.

You get up VERY early, get everyone ready, and maybe even make breakfast for the family. Then you pile into the car, navigate Orlando traffic, find your way to the parking lot, pay to park, and take the parking lot transportation to the main gates. Hopefully, you remember where you parked! Those parking lots are massive.

Maybe you’re staying at a non-Disney resort that offers a shuttle. That sounds convenient, right? But depending on the service, you may still have a walk ahead of you to reach the park entrance.

And then there’s the end of the day.

After hours of walking around the parks, riding attractions, and making memories, you’re exhausted and ready to get back to your room. If you drove, you’re piling everyone into the car and joining the traffic leaving the parks. If you’re taking a resort shuttle, you have to find that designated pickup spot and wait with your tired family while other buses and shuttles come and go.

Eventually, you make it back to your house or resort, get everyone settled into bed, and prepare to do it all over again the next morning.

Now, let’s talk about what that same park day can look like when you’re staying at a Walt Disney World Resort.

You get up early, get the family ready, and maybe head down to grab breakfast at your resort. Then it’s time to take advantage of Disney transportation!

Depending on your resort and destination, you could hop on a Disney bus with fun Disney music playing over the speakers. Maybe you’ll take the monorail toward Magic Kingdom or EPCOT, enjoy a boat ride, or hop aboard the Disney Skyliner to travel to EPCOT or Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Any way you slice it, your ride to the parks can be full of Disney magic before you even set foot inside!

And what happens when the Florida heat starts getting to you? Maybe the kids need a nap, everyone needs a break, or someone suddenly remembers that very important autograph book sitting back in the room. Depending on your resort and transportation options, you can head back for some downtime and perhaps a dip in the pool before heading out again.

At the end of the night, you can leave the car parked and use Disney transportation to return to your resort. You may still encounter lines and waits, especially after nighttime shows, but you don’t have to navigate the parking lots or drive through traffic yourself.

Staying at a Disney Resort gives you more time to enjoy your vacation with your family. And isn’t that what a vacation is all about?

Staying in the Disney Bubble

One of my favorite things about staying at a Walt Disney World Resort is that the magic doesn’t stop when you leave the parks!

The Cast Members wear costumes that complement their resort’s theme, and the service helps make the experience special. Even something as simple as sitting down for breakfast feels different when you’re enjoying Mickey waffles with Disney music playing softly in the background.

Did you forget something at home? Maybe you packed your favorite pins for trading but forgot your autograph book. Or perhaps you want the perfect souvenir to remember your resort stay. Your resort shop may have just what you’re looking for!

Then there are all the Disney touches sprinkled throughout the resorts. Some are subtle details in the artwork and decorations, while others are larger-than-life statues and displays that make you stop and take a picture.

The themed pools, the Mickey-shaped food, the music, the decorations, and the little details all add to the experience. Every resort has its own personality, and exploring where you’re staying can become part of the vacation itself.

For me, that’s the beauty of staying on property. You’re not just visiting Disney World for a few hours at a time. You can be surrounded by Disney magic 24/7.

What About the Extra Perks?

Disney Resort guests may have access to additional benefits, including Early Theme Park Entry, which currently offers eligible guests entry 30 minutes before the scheduled park opening, subject to applicable rules.

But if I’m being honest, that extra 30 minutes isn’t usually the deciding factor for me anymore. Some non-Disney hotels also offer early-entry benefits to eligible guests, so it’s important to compare the details.

I remember when Extra Magic Hours meant something different. Extended park hours could make a much bigger difference to a guest’s day. Compared with that experience, today’s extra 30 minutes doesn’t always carry the same weight for me.

That’s not to say early entry isn’t useful. Every little bit of extra park time can help! But when I’m helping someone decide where to stay, I look at the entire experience rather than making a decision based on one perk alone.

Is Staying at a Disney Resort More Expensive?

Let’s be honest: Disney Resort rooms can be expensive, and I understand why families look at off-site hotels and vacation rentals as alternatives.

When someone tells me they can get a much larger room off property for half the price, I start by acknowledging that the cost can feel overwhelming. Then I ask a question: How much time do you plan to spend in the room or at your resort?

If you’re planning to be at the parks from opening until closing, do you really need a huge vacation house? Or would a comfortable resort room that puts you closer to the action be a better fit?

Of course, that’s not the right answer for everyone. If you want a kitchen, multiple bedrooms, extra bathrooms, or plenty of space for a large group, an off-site rental may be exactly what you need.

When comparing prices, remember to look beyond the nightly room rate. Consider rental cars, gas, parking fees, airport transportation, shuttle arrangements, and any additional hotel or resort fees. Those costs can add up, and the total difference may not be what you initially expected.

Time is another factor. How long will it take to get to the parks each morning? What if you want to return to your room for an afternoon nap or a break from the Florida heat? And how much time will you spend getting back to your accommodations at the end of a long day?

Disney vacations also have payment arrangements that may help families plan their budgets. Package deposits and final-payment deadlines depend on the applicable booking terms, so be sure to review those details when planning your trip.

The goal isn’t to assume that staying on property is always cheaper. It’s to compare the whole vacation, not just the price of the room.

Finding the Right Disney Resort for Your Family

One of the things I love about Walt Disney World is the variety of accommodations available. You aren’t limited to one type of hotel room. Options range from standard rooms to suites and larger villas with multiple bedrooms, depending on the resort.

When I work with a family, I listen to their needs before recommending a resort.

Are you a park-open-to-park-close kind of family, where the room is primarily a place to sleep? Or do you want the conveniences of home, such as a kitchen and in-room laundry facilities?

How many people are traveling with you? Would multiple bathrooms make your stay more comfortable? What kind of atmosphere do you want? Are you looking for a relaxing resort experience or a colorful, kid-friendly environment filled with decorations your children will love?

First-time visitors may appreciate the convenience of staying on property without having to navigate all the transportation details themselves. Families with small children may love being able to return to the resort for naps, pool time, or a break from the heat.

Multigenerational families can benefit from that flexibility, too. Maybe some family members want to return to the resort while others want to stay in the parks until closing. Having convenient transportation options can make coordinating those different plans easier.

There is no single perfect resort for every family. That’s why choosing the right accommodations matters just as much as deciding where to stay.

A Little Disney Magic Goes a Long Way

Once upon a time, a lot longer ago than it seems, we surprised my boys with a trip to Walt Disney World.

We picked them up from school and drove to the airport. When we arrived, we used Disney’s Magical Express to get from the airport to our resort.

That evening, we were floating around the pool. Disney music played softly in the background, and the resort was filled with those special Disney touches.

My son looked at me and said, “This morning I was at school and now I am swimming at Disney World. Dreams do come true.”

That was the moment for my family when I decided: this is it. This is where we are meant to be.

It’s a memory I’ll always treasure, and it captures something that goes beyond transportation, resort amenities, or the price of a hotel room. It was the feeling of being there, together, surrounded by the magic we’d been looking forward to.

So, Is Staying at a Disney Resort Worth It?

When I’m helping a family decide where to stay, there’s one question I always ask: What is most important to you when it comes to the memories you want to make on this trip?

Is it saving time so you can squeeze every magical moment out of your park days? Is it the convenience of getting to and from the parks while still having time to enjoy your resort’s amenities? Or is it the magic of seeing your child’s face light up the moment you arrive, knowing you’re finally at Disney World?

Every family is different, and the answer might be different for every vacation.

For me, staying on property will always be my first choice. I’ve experienced Disney vacations from both sides, and I love the convenience, the atmosphere, and those little Disney touches that make the entire trip feel special.

But I also believe that Disney magic should be experienced by everyone. If we can’t find a Disney Resort that meets your family’s needs, we can explore off-site hotels, resorts, or even a vacation home with a private pool.

The best choice isn’t necessarily the most expensive resort or the biggest vacation rental. It’s the choice that works best for your family.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about where you sleep. It’s about the memories you make together. And those are the moments that stay with you long after you return home.

And that’s what Disney magic is all about.

A Weekend at Disneyland

Recently my family and I took a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim California. I ventured to Disneyland last year with our travel agency for training and I wanted to share this experience with my family.

When we started planning this trip we discussed how long to go.
Disneyland is much smaller than Disney World but packed with so much to do. I suggested we could get it done in 3 days so we made a plan. We already have a busy summer ahead. My oldest son will be off to college this fall and my youngest son doesn’t want to miss any school his senior year next year so it had to be now or never. We chose the last weekend in April because it was my mom’s birthday weekend and I wanted to share this experience with her. But could we do it all in a weekend?

Friday

We left our house at 3 a.m. to go to the airport in Baltimore. Our flight took off at 6:30 am EST and we landed at 9:30 am PST. Most of my family had never been to California so they we very excited. The flight was great although honestly I slept through most of it.

We had pre arranged transportation with the Disneyland Express to take us from LAX to our home away from home the Disneyland Hotel. I had stayed at the Disneyland hotel once before and fell in love with the charm of this resort.

Our room was located on the 8th floor of the Frontierland tower with an amazing view of the pools. If you looked to your right you could also see the Matterhorn.

After checking in and finding our room we headed to the parks. The Disneyland hotel is just outside Downtown Disney. You step out of your room and you can be at security within minutes. After you go through security you can hop on the monorail or walk through Downtown Disney to get to the parks. We chose to walk so my family could take in everything Downtown Disney has to offer.

The entrances to the Disneyland park and California Adventure are directly across from each other so once you arrive you have to make a decision where do you want to start.

As a child my mom had always dreamed of going to Disneyland. She grew up watching “Disney’s World of Color on Sunday” nights on t.v. Occasionally they would show clips from Disneyland. We have been to Walt Disney World so many times we had lost count but she still always dreamed of going to Disneyland. She wanted to walk where Walt Disney himself walked. So we chose to kick off our trip where it all began, The Disneyland Park.

Unfortunately Sleeping Beauty Castle was under refurbishment so surrounded by walls and a printed mural covered the scaffolding to keep us from seeing it. But we didn’t let that get us down.

When you enter the Disneyland Park you can just feel the magic surround you. The sights and sounds of Mainstreet, USA fill the air. The light on in the window above the Disneyland Fire Dept., left on for Walt Disney makes you feel like he is there with you. We went directly to Fantasyland to kick off our day.

We spent our day riding old favorites like Snow White’s Scary Adventures and new favorites like Pinocchio’s Daring Journey. My kids insist that some of these dark Fantasyland rides have scary stories to tell. We also rode the Matterhorn for the first time. We had dinner reservations at Carnation Café.

Then my boys insisted they needed to go back to the hotel for a nap and to go swimming. It had been a very long day. The Disneyland park was open until midnight which would be 3 am our time so I guess sleep was required. We all went back to the room for a nap. My boys never made it back to the parks that night. We ventured back after a few hours rest.

Eric, my mom and I ride rode The Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Tours. We watched the fireworks from the back of the park. On our way back to our room we stopped for drinks at Trader Sam’s.

It was a fun but exhausting day. We finally crashed hard at around 10:30 PM

Saturday Disney’s California Adventure Park opened for resort guests at 7 am but would we make it? Stay Tuned to find out………
