Choosing a cruise can feel a little like choosing a vacation destination, a hotel, and an entertainment package all at once. With so many cruise lines, ships, itineraries, and experiences available, where do you even begin?
The truth is that cruising isn’t a one-size-fits-all vacation.
Some travelers want character experiences, Broadway-style shows, and family fun. Others want waterslides, casinos, and nonstop activities. Maybe you’re looking for an adults-only escape with incredible dining and nightlife, or perhaps you’d rather sail through historic European towns and enjoy the scenery along the way.
There really is something for everyone!
But how do you know which cruise line is right for you?
Let’s take a look at four very different cruising experiences and what makes each one special.

Start With You: What Are You Looking For?
When someone tells me they’re thinking about taking a cruise, my first question is always: Do you have a cruise line in mind?
With so many options available, it’s a natural place to start. But just because someone has a particular cruise line in mind doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best fit for them.
I like to get to know a little more about what they’re looking for before making recommendations.
Are you traveling with children? If so, what are their ages? Have you cruised before, or will this be your first time?
Where would you like to go? Are you dreaming of warm Caribbean beaches, exploring Alaska, or visiting somewhere completely different?
And there’s another practical consideration: are you willing to fly to your departure port, or would you prefer to drive?
All of these details help narrow down the choices. My goal isn’t simply to find someone a cruise. It’s to help them find the cruise experience that makes the most sense for them.
Disney Cruise Line: Where the Magic Meets the Sea

For those who love Disney, a Disney cruise is about so much more than simply getting on a ship. It’s about bringing the magic of Disney storytelling to the sea.
One of the things that makes Disney Cruise Line stand out is its exceptional service. Through its rotational dining experience, guests visit different themed restaurants throughout their cruise while keeping the same serving team each night. You get to experience something new at dinner while building a relationship with the cast members who take care of you.
Of course, the Disney characters are a big part of the experience. Guests have opportunities to meet Mickey and his friends, including beloved Disney Princesses. The children’s clubs carry that storytelling experience forward with immersive Disney theming and activities designed for different age groups.

But Disney isn’t just for children!
Adults have their own spaces aboard the ships, including adults-only areas where they can escape the excitement and enjoy some peaceful downtime.
Even the ships themselves make a statement. Their classic black, white, yellow, and red color scheme gives them an elegant, almost regal appearance.
Entertainment is another major highlight. Disney offers Broadway-style stage productions that the entire family can enjoy, along with its signature fireworks at sea experience, a particularly memorable feature of Disney cruising.
And for families, the staterooms deserve some attention. Many family staterooms feature split bathrooms, allowing one person to shower while another uses the sink and toilet. Some also include bathtubs, which can be especially helpful when traveling with younger children.
Who is Disney Cruise Line best for?
Families who love Disney storytelling, character experiences, immersive entertainment, and exceptional service will find plenty to enjoy. It’s also a wonderful option for couples and adults who appreciate Disney and want a more relaxed way to experience that magic.
Royal Caribbean: Something for Everyone

If you love the idea of a Disney cruise but aren’t quite ready for Disney pricing, Royal Caribbean is definitely worth considering.
One of the biggest advantages of Royal Caribbean is the variety. From the enormous Icon Class ships packed with attractions to the more intimate Vision Class ships, there is a sailing experience for just about every type of traveler.
Royal Caribbean also offers a different atmosphere onboard. Compared with Disney, you’ll find more adult-oriented entertainment and nightlife, casinos, and a variety of drink packages. Dining is flexible, too. You can enjoy the included main dining room each evening or choose from specialty restaurants for an additional charge.
The entertainment is another major highlight. Depending on the ship, guests can enjoy Broadway-style productions, comedy shows, live music, and even productions of The Price Is Right. On select ships, the AquaTheater shows are particularly impressive, featuring incredible diving and acrobatic performances. They’re definitely worth seeing!
For families, Royal Caribbean has plenty to offer. The Adventure Ocean kids’ clubs provide engaging activities, and I can personally tell you that my daughter begs to go to the kids’ club every day! That’s a pretty good endorsement from a little traveler.

And if you’re someone who likes a little adventure, certain ships offer experiences like ziplining and RipCord by iFLY, an indoor skydiving simulator.

The beauty of Royal Caribbean is that you can make your vacation as active or as relaxing as you want. Spend your day climbing, swimming, ziplining, and exploring, or find a quiet spot on deck and enjoy the ocean views.
Who is Royal Caribbean best for?
Families, couples, multigenerational groups, and travelers who want lots of options will find something to love. It’s especially appealing to people who enjoy having plenty of activities and entertainment available without feeling obligated to participate in everything.
Virgin Voyages: Adults-Only Cruising With a Twist

Looking for an adults-only getaway? Virgin Voyages might be exactly what you’re looking for.
Whether you’re planning an intimate romantic escape or a fun getaway with a group of friends, Virgin Voyages offers an experience that feels completely different from traditional cruising. And one of the biggest differences? No children onboard. Virgin Voyages is exclusively for adults 18 and older.
Even the staterooms have a personality of their own. They feature customizable mood lighting, creating an atmosphere that can change depending on your mood. And if you’re staying in a Sea Terrace room, let’s take a moment to appreciate one of my favorite features: the hammock on your private balcony! Imagine relaxing in that hammock while sailing across the ocean. Yes, please!

Virgin Voyages also makes it easy to maintain your healthy lifestyle while on vacation. There are complimentary fitness classes, a well-equipped gym, and a running track at the top of the ship where you can enjoy some pretty incredible ocean views while getting your steps in.
Dining: A Foodie’s Dream

Dining is another area where Virgin Voyages does things differently.
Forget the traditional cruise buffet. Instead, Virgin offers The Galley, a food-hall-style dining experience with a variety of options. You can order directly from your table and have food brought to you, or walk up to the different stations and order what you’re craving.

Dinner is an entirely different experience. Guests can make reservations at a variety of restaurants featuring different cuisines and dining styles. The best part? These restaurants are included in your cruise fare, giving you that elevated dining experience without the additional specialty dining charges you might find on other cruise lines.
Forget Formal Night. Think Scarlet Night!
If traditional formal nights aren’t your thing, you’ll appreciate Virgin’s approach to evening entertainment.

One of the signature experiences is Scarlet Night. Instead of dressing up for a traditional formal night, guests are encouraged to wear red. The celebration takes place throughout the ship, with different activities and experiences that eventually build into an unforgettable pool party.
And the entertainment doesn’t stop there. Virgin offers nightclubs, themed parties, cabaret performances, and entertainment that feels less like traditional cruise-ship shows and more like a nightlife experience.
One particularly memorable part of the entertainment is the resident Diva, Virgin’s drag queen performer. From cabaret shows to bingo and hosting parties, the Diva brings personality, humor, and plenty of energy to the ship. It’s the kind of entertainment that makes Virgin Voyages stand out.

Who is Virgin Voyages best for?
Couples looking for a romantic escape, groups of friends wanting an adults-only adventure, food lovers, and travelers who enjoy nightlife and a more modern, unconventional cruise experience.
If you’re looking for a traditional family cruise, this isn’t the one. But if you’re ready for a grown-up getaway, Virgin Voyages deserves a spot on your list.
River Cruises: Let the Destination Be the Adventure

Not every cruise needs to take place on the open ocean. From the Mississippi River in the United States to the rivers of Europe, river cruising offers an entirely different way to explore the world.
Unlike large ocean-going ships, river cruise vessels are smaller and offer a more intimate experience. Most staterooms face outward, allowing guests to enjoy beautiful scenery as the ship travels through charming towns, historic cities, and picturesque countryside.
One of the biggest advantages of river cruising is the opportunity to unpack once and visit multiple incredible destinations. Imagine waking up in a new European town, enjoying breakfast onboard, and then stepping off the ship to explore its history, culture, and local attractions.
River cruises also tend to offer more inclusions in their fares, which can make budgeting easier and reduce some of the extra charges travelers may encounter on traditional ocean cruises. Inclusions vary by cruise line, so it’s always important to compare what’s actually included.
Entertainment is also different. Rather than focusing on elaborate production shows and onboard attractions, river cruises tend to emphasize the destinations themselves. Guests may enjoy local musicians, cultural presentations, regional cuisine, and excursions that help them experience the places they’re visiting.
Most river cruise lines cater primarily to adults, couples, and mature travelers. However, there are family-friendly options available for those interested in experiencing river cruising with children.
Who are river cruises best for?
Travelers who enjoy history, culture, sightseeing, and exploring multiple destinations will likely love river cruising. It’s especially appealing to those who prefer a more relaxed, intimate vacation where the journey and the destinations are equally important.
What Does a Cruise Really Cost? Looking Beyond the Advertised Price

One of the reasons cruising is so attractive to travelers is the value it can offer. Your accommodations, transportation between destinations, meals, and entertainment are often bundled into one vacation price.
But before booking, there are some additional expenses worth considering.
Getting to the port
If you’re flying to your departure port, don’t forget to budget for airfare and transportation to the terminal. I also strongly recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation. Nobody wants a delayed flight to become the reason they miss their cruise!
That means budgeting for a hotel stay, meals, and possibly transportation before your vacation even begins.
Shore excursions
Exploring the destinations is often one of the best parts of cruising, but excursions generally come at an additional cost. Whether you want to snorkel in the Caribbean, explore an Alaskan glacier, or take a guided tour through a historic European city, those experiences can add up.
Drinks and beverage packages
Depending on the cruise line, specialty coffees, alcoholic beverages, sodas, and other drinks may not be included in your fare. Beverage packages are available on many ships, or you can purchase drinks individually. Think about your family’s habits before deciding which option makes the most financial sense.
Specialty dining and spa experiences
Want to enjoy a special dinner or treat yourself to a massage while at sea? These experiences can make your vacation even more memorable, but they often come with additional charges.
Wi-Fi and staying connected
How important is it for you to share your adventures with family and friends back home? Internet access can come at a premium onboard, so it’s worth checking Wi-Fi packages before sailing. Some travelers are happy to disconnect, while others want to stay connected throughout their trip.
Travel documents
For certain closed-loop cruises departing from and returning to the same U.S. port, eligible U.S. citizens may be able to travel with an original or certified birth certificate and government-issued photo ID instead of a passport. However, documentation requirements vary by itinerary and traveler.
My personal recommendation? Get a passport if you don’t already have one. It provides more flexibility when traveling and can be especially helpful if an unexpected situation requires you to fly home from a foreign port. Remember to check the requirements for your specific itinerary before sailing.
The bottom line: Don’t compare cruises based solely on the advertised fare. Look at the complete vacation cost, including the extras that matter most to you.
